Electrotherapy for Tissue Healing and Pain Relief
I use Electrotherapy where manipulation is contraindicated and where pain relief is required." Electrotherapy is a safe, effective, quick and easy to use addition to manual treatment. It improves pain relief and tissue repair and can be used when manual manipulation is contraindicated.
In practice, Electrotherapy is the application of electric current to the body to reduce pain or speed healing. The term encompasses many types of therapies including Shortwave diathermy, Ultrasound, TENS, Interferential Stimulation and Photomedicine.
Some of the main electrotherapy methods available within the clinic are listed below:
1)
Shortwave diathermy - produces an electromagnetic field that generates heat within tissues. This helps healing, reduces swelling and offers pain relief. It is useful for treating soft tissue injuries, slow healing wounds, sinusitis and conditions affecting the pelvic area.
2)
Ultrasound - involves using high frequency sound waves to treat injuries to muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. It is thought to stimulate blood circulation and cell activity, accelerating the healing process and providing pain relief.
3)
TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) - produces pain relief by blocking pain messages to the brain
4)
Interferential Stimulation - has three major clinical benefits: the reduction of pain, the stimulation of healing and the reduction in recovery time. Pain reduction occurs because the applied electrical fields act to close the body's "pain gate mechanism". That is, pain signals are blocked from reaching the brain so that the patient never experiences them. In addition, electrical stimulation causes the body to produce more endorphins -- pain-reducing chemicals made naturally by the body. Interferential Stimulation also activates the body's motor nerves. This results in increased blood flow and reduced oedema (excess fluid).

5)
Photomedicine - is the application of red and near infrared radiation over compromised areas such injuries, arthritic joints, lower back, and neck disorders providing non-invasive, drug-free pain relief without side effects
6)
Laser - is used to produce a concentrated beam of light radiation. Laser therapy is a safe, effective, quick and easy to use addition to manual treatment. It improves pain relief and tissue repair and can be used when manual manipulation is contraindicated It is often used for skin conditions and soft tissue injuries and to heal open wounds.

Electrotherapy is safe and comfortable. Electrotherapies are completely drug-free and have no known side effects. The voltages used are low and the only sensation is one of slight vibration.
